No official return date has been set for evacuees. Check out our Stories & Updates Section for more photos of where your dontations are going.
Since 2016, educators and students in Toronto and Cross Lake have come together—first in response to a tragic crisis, then in the spirit of connection, learning, and long-lasting friendships. What began as an effort to support a community reeling from a state of emergency due to teen suicides has grown into a powerful partnership built on education, collaboration, and shared purpose.
Over the years, this relationship has led to meaningful projects, reciprocal visits, and deep bonds between colleagues, students, and friends. We’ve learned from each other, stood with each other, and built meaningful relationships.
Today, Cross Lake faces another emergency. The community of over 6000 people was evacuated due to wildfires on May 29, 2025. They need our support.
Now is the time to act. Together, we can make change.
Your donation through our GoFundMe goes directly to families in need on the ground.
Urgent items currently needed include:
Wagons – to help families with young children or babies move more easily and carry belongings
Blankets and pillows – for comfort and warmth
Diapers, clothing, shoes, and other essential supplies as the evacuation continues
We are working closely with community members who have been evacuated to Winnipeg to ensure supplies are delivered directly to those who need them most. Thank you for your support.
Students at participating schools can bring in your spare change and drop it in a donation jar — every bit helps and every coin counts.
Funds will go directly to families in need, dog food, blankets and assistance where needed.

Think about how you live — and how you can reduce your impact on the planet. Wildfires like these shouldn’t be the new normal. Every action, no matter how small or far away, makes a difference.
Learn about Canada's true history with Indigenous peoples. Why were reservations created? What is the Bryce Report, or the White Paper? How can you make change - by learning, questioning and taking positive action.
Little by little change starts with each of us. Little changes individually, makes big change together.
Change for Cross Lake is our call to action:
Give change – every coin counts toward helping displaced families.
Change your ways – make environmentally conscious choices.
Change ideas – learn about Indigenous communities and take steps toward reconciliation.
This crisis hits close to home. Many of us teachers and students in Toronto, ON have had the privilege of connecting with Cross Lake students and eductors through educational exchanges, fundraising campaigns, book drives, and/or working together on projects.
